Autograph Collecting

Autograph collecting has gotten complicated with all the forgeries and authentication debates flying around. As someone who’s built a solid autograph collection over years of careful acquisition, I learned everything there is to know about this fascinating corner of the hobby. Today, I will share it all with you.

Why Autographs Matter

That’s what makes autograph collecting endearing to us sports fans — a signature represents a direct connection between you and the athlete. Unlike mass-produced cards, an autograph required that player to physically interact with your item.

In-Person vs. Certified

Probably should have led with this section, honestly. Two main paths to autographs exist:

  • In-person (IP) – You obtain the signature directly from the athlete
  • Certified – Third party witnessed and authenticated the signing

In-person collecting requires access, timing, and persistence. Certified autos cost more but come with documentation.

Authentication Services

Major authenticators for autographs:

  • PSA/DNA – Industry standard, widely accepted
  • JSA – James Spence, respected alternative
  • Beckett – Good reputation, especially for cards
  • SGC – Growing authentication division

Authentication isn’t perfect. Even experts disagree on marginal signatures. But certified autos sell for premiums over uncertified.

Spotting Forgeries

Common forgery tells:

  • Hesitation marks from tracing
  • Inconsistent pen pressure
  • Signatures that don’t match known exemplars
  • Too-good-to-be-true pricing
  • Sellers with no verifiable reputation

Building a Collection

Smart autograph collectors:

  • Focus on players they genuinely care about
  • Research signature evolution (players’ autos change over careers)
  • Document acquisition dates and circumstances
  • Store properly to prevent ink degradation
  • Consider the item signed, not just the signature

The Investment Question

Hall of Famers and legends appreciate over time. Current players are speculative. Deceased players with limited authentic signatures become increasingly valuable as supply is fixed.

Collect what you love first. Value follows genuine passion.
